The Gangs of New York

The Gangs of New York is a classic in terms of the true crime genre, which was made into the film of the same name with Martin Scorsese as the director starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Daniel Day Lewis, among others.

The book is a history of New York City going back to the 1800s looking up the crooks that made up the city during the early days, and how their presence has shaped the city, and America more generally.

I have neither read the book or seen the movie, so it will be something that has extra appeal with the recent well publicized mayoral election that seemed to catch the attention of a lot of people, because it is New York City.
